A parent told me recently, that my picture book ‘Chill with Lil’ works wonders for children with ADHD - I’m amazed it’s going way beyond what I set out for it to do.

The reason why I made this book in the first place was because I felt sorry for mates of mine tearing their hair out trying to get their kids to bed. And as I’d been meditating for years and knew the instant benefits first hand, I decided to apply those principles to this book.

‘Chill with Lil’ is a story about Jake the cat, who does everything to swerve going to bed: getting toys out, having a strop - you know the score. Then Auntie Lil (who knows how to chill), comes over and calms him down with some breathing exercises and a guided meditation, which I designed for kids to join in with.

I’ve tried and tested this book on dozens of kids (some have actually dozed off during sessions!) and a lot of you have said it’s a constant bedtime favourite. So if you’d like to make a frazzled parent happy, why not gift them a copy this Christmas? ✨

Just a handful of schools I’ve been to with ‘Chinglish’. I’ve lost count of how many exactly, but I’ve spoken to well over 10’s of 1000s of students. Last thing I thought was for this book to end up as set text in classrooms - but that’s what happened! And it’s still going strong.

By going public with this almost entirely true story, I inadvertently found myself up on the nation’s stages spilling the (mung) beans about my teen strife. And became an authority on what it’s like to be an author from a working class, minority background. But I didn’t know any of that to start with - I just wrote and published a thing! Anyway, if I was going to be ‘the face of’ and sound like I knew wise and important stuff, I had to learn fast.

Five years on, I’m now proud to be educating, and it’s kind of fun surprising everyone with my mashed up Midlands/north/south accent and slang, with not a tinge of Chinese to match my mug. And if that gets across that I belong, they belong, and everyone belongs - then I’m more than happy to keep wheeling out ‘Chinglish’, for everyone who still needs to hear it.

I’m redesigning my website and digging out some great pics.

These are from the Blossom Awards, London, for British-Chinese community’s achievements in arts, culture, business, science, sport, public service…a dozen categories in all.

There were 200+ of us and I remember thinking, ‘Wow! Where have all these people beeeen?’ ‘Cause after generations in the UK, we really are still the ‘invisible minority’.

Fingers crossed they start these awards again- for visibility, community spirit, and well- it was just a mind-blowing night meeting all these inspiring people frankly.
